I remember when the first Parasite Eve game came out back in 1998. I was in college at the time. I had stopped in at a Best Buy store and bought that and the new Jay-Z - Hard Knock Life cd. Parasite Eve was a new breed of game at the time. I was an RPG no doubt but it was an action influenced RPG. The background story of the game was great. The gameplay was a little rudimentary at the time but what it lacked in gameplay it quickly made up in CGI video sequences that tied into the story. That definitely kept me playing the game. The second Parasite Eve was just the same.
The new game that features Aya Brea is devoid of all similarities as the recent installment tries to go a different path. Its not even called Parasite Eve. Its called The Third Birthday. So you don't really need to play the other two games to relate to the new one. The game starts out as Aya having no recollection of her past but she is quickly pulled into action when trouble arises. That trouble is called the Twisted, monsters that have eroded time and space and invaded a near future New York. Aya joins the CTI(Counter Twisted Investigation) squad to destroy the evil menace.
Aya's psyche is sent back in time using a machine called the "Overdrive". By using this particular device she is able to control troops to alter the outcome of battle in hopes of changing the future. The game is not without fault. There are some annoyances. The story is the main thing. Its broad and abstract covering a number of different themes. This is just one of those games where visuals take precedence over gameplay. So if you like a lot of action CGI action then this might be the game for you. Here's a trailer of the new game:
