If you got this message on your PlayStation 3 in the picture above last week like I did then you already know that the PlayStation Network is down. PlayStation corporate communications and social media senior director Patrick Seybold says that they had an "External Intrusion". Now that's a nice way to say that they've been hacked isn't it? Now its 6:21am Sunday morning right now and I've my PS3 once again to see if the PlayStation Network is back up and it is not. I won't go as far as saying that I'm upset about the turn of events instead I'll say that I'm just a little disappointed about what is going on.
When I found out what happened on Wednesday I was actually trying to play some online matches on NBA 2K11 just before I got the maintenance message. This must mean that whoever hacked the PlayStation Network hit them really hard. The internet hacker group Anonymous was said to have a hand in this due to their previous exploits of trying to crash the PlayStation Network servers in support of George Hotz, otherwise know to the internet as GeoHotz.
Earlier this month Hotz was being sued by Sony for allegedly cracking, tampering, and distributing Sony PS3 signed code. Sony and Hotz later settled out of court. Anonymous claims that they're not the ones behind this recent event of the Network shutdown though. What Sony has claimed would only be a 1 to 2 day fix has turned into four days of online anguish for PlayStation 3 owners. This comes at a bad time when new releases have arrived such as Mortal Kombat and SOCOM 4. I definitely feel bad for those loyal Call of Duty: Black Ops fans. You know they need their fix.
The worst thing about it was that there was no formal video announcement from Sony. It would've been nice if we could have seen a spokes person from Sony or the PlayStation Network talk about what happened and how they were going to go about fixing it. Talk about bad PR. They sort have left us in the dark. I was browsing YouTube and I found one guy that shares my sentiments. Watch this funny tirade. lol
