Well last month we were all upset with Netflix's decision to split up their brand, sending their DVD mail order service to their new, now defunct, Qwikster website. It looks like our complaints made the guys at Netflix change their mind. Well that and the fact that the decision to change was so bad that they lost loyal customers over it, to the tune of 600,000. This is what happens when you try to maximize your profits by thinking up crazy zany business strategies instead of just doing business as usual.
If it's not broke don't fix it. I can't necessarily say that it was greed that drove them versus the necessity to grow but they weren't exactly hurting before they made the decision. I actually backed them in my last post about them to go with their decision just because it was their right to expand and grow as a company. It's how you go about it either puts you on top or grinds you into the ground. Unfortunately for Netflix it was the latter of the two. Well fortunately for Netflix the decision didn't necessarily cripple them but I think it woke them up to how loyalty and betrayal can swim in the same circles.
This is a true testament to how the customer can be soooooooooooooo right. lol They can be so "right" that if you go against them they will definitely make you feel every square inch of their disappointment. I think it's safe to say that Netflix will think twice about their business decisions and maybe run them by their customers for approval. Just like many customers I received an email yesterday morning from Netflix retracting their decision to split up the company. Take a look:
"
Dear Ben, It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs. This means no change: one website, one account, one password…in other words, no Qwikster. While the July price change was necessary, we are now done with price changes. We're constantly improving our streaming selection. We've recently added hundreds of movies from Paramount, Sony, Universal, Fox, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, MGM and Miramax. Plus, in the last couple of weeks alone, we've added over 3,500 TV episodes from ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, USA, E!, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, ABC Family, Discovery Channel, TLC, SyFy, A&E, History, and PBS. We value you as a member, and we are committed to making Netflix the best place to get your movies & TV shows. Respectfully, The Netflix Team" |
