Apple Announcement Today | Apple Developer Conference | New iPhone

Apple's big announcement: A new iPhone?

By Jefferson Graham, USA TODAY

Is there a new iPhone in your future?

Apple (AAPL) opens its annual Worldwide Developers Conference Monday in San Francisco, where tech analysts expect the company to tout its new iPhone 3.0 software and a new iPhone. It will also preview the next version of its operating system for Mac computers, OS X Snow Leopard.

Apple is facing renewed competition from rival Palm, (PALM) which started selling its new — and well-received — Palm Pre smartphone over the weekend with exclusive partner Sprint (S).

"They had to come out with a new iPhone now, to one-up the Pre," says Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray. Munster expects mid-July availability for any new iPhone.

He also expects tiered pricing, with an entry-level model available for $149 (down from the current $199) and a premium phone with a video camera and higher-capacity storage for $299.

Apple, typically mum, declined to comment.

The software upgrade is even more important than a new iPhone handset, says Charles Wolf, an analyst at Needham and Co.

The center of gravity in the smartphone market has shifted from hardware to software, Wolf says. "And there Apple has an enormous lead."

The latest iPhone software, to be introduced this summer as a free upgrade (or $9.95 for folks who own Apple's iPod Touch media player) offers such enhancements as the ability to cut and paste Web pages and send MMS (multimedia messaging service) text messages with photos.

Apple uses its developers conference to show off its wares and encourage software designers to make programs for its products. Those efforts have paid off greatly when it comes to the iPhone and Touch, which combined have sold 37 million units.

The company has sold more than 1 billion applications for the iPhone and Touch, from games and productivity tools to elegant entertainment apps such as Ocarina, which lets you play the phone as a flute. There are 40,000 offerings at Apple's App Store.

Beyond product announcements today, tech analysts and bloggers are abuzz over whether Apple CEO Steve Jobs might make an appearance at the event.

Jobs took a health-related leave of absence earlier this year and is supposed to return work at the end of the month.

Munster, for one, is not counting on an early showing. "There's a 20% chance he comes out," Munster says. "And 95% chance he's back at the end of the month, like Apple says."

Apple spokesman Steve Dowling says, "We look forward to Steve's return at the end of June."

At the conference, which is sold out, about 5,000 developers will get a final preview release of Snow Leopard, Apple says. The company, however, hasn't given a release date for the software.

Rival Microsoft (MSFT) is introducing a new version of its Windows computer operating system — Windows 7 — in October.

Palm Pre launched | Smartphone | iPhone | Apple's WWDC

Short Lines Formed for Pre Launch

Sprint sold out of Pre's in some areas

Back in January the Palm Pre was first shown at CES 2009. Since it first debuted at the show, it has been among the most highly anticipated smartphones of the year. Over the weekend, the Palm Pre launched and both Sprint and Palm are hoping the device can save the ailing companies.

Reuters reports that the launch of the Pre saw some lines form at stores in larger cities as shoppers looked to get their hands on the new smartphone. As expected, the Pre launch was a drop in the bucket compared to the epic launch of the iPhone several years ago.

Reuters reports that while the lines of fans waiting to buy the Pre were shorter than seen for the iPhone, the customers will still anxious to get their hands on the new device.

Peter Lewis, a shopper in line for a Pre, told Reuters, "I wanted their iPhone killer. I've been anticipating this for a while."
Sprint is hoping that the Pre will prove popular enough that it will help stop the subscriber defections plaguing the company and help it win customers back form Verizon and AT&T. A Sprint spokesperson said that as of late Saturday Sprint had sold out of Pre's at a number of locations around the country and Sprint was working to try to restock the stores.

Palm's Executive Chairman Jon Rubinstein said, "It's always nice to see a bunch of people waiting for a product you worked on." He continued saying, "For us, the opportunity is not to take customers away from RIM or Apple." The opportunity here according to Rubinstein is to get Sprint customers to upgrade from basic handsets to the new Pre. An increasing percentage of most cellular providers revenue is coming from data plans, which smartphones are optimized for.

The limelight will shine on Palm for a scant few more hours before Apple's WWDC kicks off in California. Apple is widely expected to launch a new iPhone at the conference in the keynote set to kick off shortly. The first official Pre reviews for the Pre were favorable.

Live updates from Apple WWDC 2009 on Twitter

The annual Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) kicks off today with a keynote address at 10 a.m., and we'll be there live-Twittering the event.

Apple executives, led by Philip Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, will speak to a crowd of news reporters and more than 1,000 independent developers.

Since this year's annual Macworld conference in January was set to be the company's last, WWDC now will be Apple's only major yearly venue for product announcements. We should expect a slew of new gadgets, computers and software to come out of today's speech.

The Technology Blog will be at Moscone Center in San Francisco to bring you up-to-the-second updates on announcements made during the keynote address.

We'll be Twittering the event, which you can follow at @LATimestech. Click the "read more" link below for a stream of those updates.

Copying XBOX Games | Playing XBOX | XBOX 360 | Consoles Games

Copying XBOX Games

by: Terry Dunn

There really is no shortcut to copying XBOX games. In fact, this is a mightily complicated process and has stumped some really techie people. This is evident with the prevalence of the question on copying XBOX games in Internet message boards and tech chat rooms. But why does one need to be going about there and copying XBOX games? Is this not legal?

If you have an XBOX and you have purchased original games to play on it, chances are you must have ran through a huge chunk of your savings. Original games are very expensive and because CDs are not exactly immortal, you can eventually wear out a game especially if you use it every minute of the day.

To give value to consumers, most countries allow original CD buyers to make back-up copies of their XBOX games in case their original got damaged or got lost provided that they are aware of the law against pirated software and that they actually own an original cd and are only copying XBOX games for their personal use only.

While it is relatively easy to do the copying of XBOX games, the same cannot be said in actually using the XBOX games that you have copied. Most software contain an encryption that must be met when inserted in an XBOX. Copying an XBOX game, however, does not copy this encryption. This is a protection system that most XBOX consoles have as protection against flagrant copying of XBOX games.

To be able to run XBOX games that you have copied, you need to modify your XBOX. This can be a daunting task especially to beginners who are afraid of destroying their XBOXes with their tinkering.

According to most tech experts, there are a lot of ways to modifying your XBOX in order to accommodate the practice of copying of XBOX games. Some are quite complicated and only a tech expert could do while other ways can be expensive but easy.

One is to buy and install a MOD-chip. This will allow your console to play XBOX games that you have copied as well as play imported games from other countries with perfect sound and video with no problem at all. While it may seem that all you have to do is purchase a MOD-Chip and then voila, you have another think coming. There are actually a lot of things that you should consider when buying a MOD-Chip. Most recommend the Divineo Modchips, which are purported to be really reliable. Some of the popular brands are the Xecuter 2 and 3, Xenium, SmartXX, X-bit, Alladin, Chameleon and Xchip.

Another way in copying and using XBOX games is to change the BIOS of the XBOX so that it will no longer read the requirements of the digitally-signed software. This is basically reprogramming the whole BIOS.

You might also consider purchasing a bigger hard drive and just save all your games inside the XBOX. This way, you already have copy of your favorite games inside and would no longer need to swap CDs.

The third way is to do the game swapping technique, wherein you will first boot the original CD and then swap the copy once it has already booted up. This might be very complicated and will not actually serve your purpose in copying your XBOX games that is to preserve your original CDs.

Shader Model 2 Download

A free DirectX 9 pixel shader benchmark

ShaderMark is a DirectX 9.0 pixel shader benchmark. All the vertex and pixel shader code was written in Microsoft's High Level Shading Language.

ShaderMark provides the possibility to use different compiler targets and advanced options.

It also features a picture quality comparison based on mean square error (MSE) values.

Motivation
Currently there is no DirectX 9.0 HLSL pixel shader benchmark on the market. Futuremark's 3DMark03 (www.futuremark.com) and Massive's AquaMark 3.0 (www.aquamark.com) are bases on hand written assembler shaders or partly HLSL shaders. HLSL is the future of shader development!

The HLSL shader compiler and its different profiles have to be tested and this gap fills ShaderMark v2.1. Driver cheating is also an issue. With ShaderMark, it is easily possible to change the underlying HLSL shader code which makes it impossible to "optimize" a driver for a certain shader, instead of the whole shader pipeline. ShaderMark v2.1 is also the first pixel shader benchmark, which measures the performance of the new shader model 3.0

Picture Quality Mode
The picture quality mode allows comparison of the Microsoft reference rasterizer with the current hardware rasterizer. This works only for the default (1024x768x32 with No FSAA) settings! It will calculate an MSE for every shader. The MSE values give a rough overview of how close the hardware renderer matches the Microsoft reference rasterizer:

shader 2 mse: 0.56019783
shader 3 mse: 0.54107634
shader 4 mse: 0.52548536
shader 5 mse: 0.52206866
shader 6 mse: 0.53719330
shader 7 mse: 0.43692334
shader 8 mse: 0.71990108
shader 9 mse: 0.40015380
shader 10 mse: 1.38709068
shader 11 mse: 0.64171155
shader 12 mse: 0.60582860
shader 13 mse: 0.66471100
shader 14 mse: 0.33196863
shader 15 mse: 1.29484272
shader 16 mse: 0.89861202
shader 17 mse: 0.30872790
shader 19 mse: 0.85641289
shader 20 mse: 0.56255150
shader 21 mse: 0.56256898
shader 22 mse: 7.91011810
shader 23 mse: 8.11475976
shader 24 mse: 8.11018531
shader 25 mse: 0.53177166
shader 26 mse: 0.53177166

The smaller the values, the better. Shader 18 isn't included, because the hair animation would invalidate the results.
What's New in This Release: [ read full changelog ]

• compiled with the latest Intel 8.1 Compiler
• linked against the latest Microsoft HLSL Compiler
• added 1.0 of the ShaderMark v2.1 Chart Maker , which requires the .NET Framewrok v1.1

Super Mario Galaxy 2 | New Super Mario Bros | Mario Wii games | Nintendo E3 Press Conference

Two new Super Mario Wii games announced at Nintendo E3 press conference

by Jeff Bakalar

Now that the Nintendo E3 2009 press conference is behind us, let's take a look at some of the game announcements for the Wii. While we saw a few titles we were expecting, there were a couple that came as total surprises.

Right out of the gate, we got to see a brand-new 2D Mario Bros. game for the Wii. New Super Mario Bros. will allow for four-player co-op playing and will feature new game characters and power ups.

Wii Fit Plus, the successor to Wii Fit, will arrive in the fall and come bundled once again with a balance board. Of course, the software will also be available separately for those who already own it.

While we already knew about the July 26 release of Wii Sports Resort, we did get to see archery and basketball demos take advantage of the Wii MotionPlus peripheral. Speaking of MotionPlus, Nintendo announced that the Ubisoft-developed Red Steel 2 will require the accessory to play.

While we also knew about the Wii exclusives Dead Space: Extraction, Resident Evil Dark Side Chronicles, and The Conduit, we were thrilled to see a new Metroid game unveiled. Metroid Other M seems to be a hybrid first-person meets third-person action title and will be released in 2010.

Finally, we were treated to a taste of a Super Mario Galaxy sequel. Super Mario Galaxy 2 features more 3D Mario action geared at gamers of all ages. This title is also set to release in 2010.

Expect more from the Final Fantasy XIII roundtable presentation tomorrow evening.

E3 2009: Liveblogging from Sony's media briefing

Tag: final fantasy xiv, final fantasy 14 online, e3, ff xiv, final fantasy 14 trailer, god of war III, gran turismo 5, the last guardian, mario kart, littlebigplanet, assassin's creed II

Game Hunters has relocated to the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles right as Sony kicks off its media briefing for the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Among the news we may hear: A potential release date for God of War III. Stay tuned.

4:06 p.m.: Tretton wraps up the briefing. Looks like Sony kept a couple bits of news under wraps, namely the motion control demos and Final Fantasy XIV. Readers, what did you think?

4:05 p.m.: The size of these enemies is pretty astounding. An enormous reddish creature lurks in the background. For those familiar with the series, he's about as big as Ares in the early parts of the first game. God of War III is slated for release in March 2010.

4:03 p.m.: Kratos vanquishes a minotaur wielding a huge staff. Attacks work similarly to how players would battle a cyclops in earlier games.

4:01 p.m.: The demos shows Kratos navigating a series of tunnels by grabbing harpies with his swords and using them to fly across.

3:59 p.m.: Saving the best for last, it seems. Kratos makes his appearance, as developers prepare a demo of God of War III.

3:57 p.m.: Next up: Gran Turismo 5. Sony whips out a brand new trailer for the racing franchise. The game looks great. I wonder how they handle the release of this game for owners of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue.

3:53 p.m.: The game focuses on a young boy befriended by a giant creature resembling a griffin. The two characters seem to work together cooperatively.

3:52 p.m.: The recently leaked video of their latest project looks to be legitimate. If you haven't seen it, search for Project Trico on YouTube.

3:50 p.m.: Tretton now discussing the next project from the developers behind ICO. The game is called The Last Guardian.

3:45 p.m.: Players can also create their own tracks by driving a vehicle around a blank, green field. Players can turn tracks to dirt and add mountainous terrain. The level of customization is rather robust.

3:44 p.m.: Producers showing ModNation Racers in action. The style of play is reminiscent of Mario Kart.

3:42 p.m.: Players can create their own drivers and go-karts, United Front producers say. The templates look similar to the LittleBigPlanet characters, without all the burlap.

3:39 p.m.: Tretton says motion controls for the PS3 will launch in Spring 2010.

3:38 p.m.: The producer jumps into first-person view to demonstrate use of a bow and arrow. One remote serves as the bow, while the other pulls the bow string.

3:36 p.m.: Using two remotes, the producer is controlling a figure carrying a sword and shield. Holding his right arm high to guard, he executes quick flicks and strokes with the other controller for sword attacks.

3:35 p.m.: The controller can be used to write with as well. A producer is using it to write on a virtual notepad and to coat a wall with a can of spray paint.

3:33 p.m.: Now developers are using the remote as a mace, a whip and a gun. The device looks about as big as a Wii remote.

3:31 p.m.: The controller on screen is changing to different objects, including a tennis racket, baseball bat and stop sign. Movement seems quite precise.

3:30 p.m.: The developer is holding a wand with a bright blue light at the end. The device will incorporate the PlayStation EyeToy camera.

3:29 p.m.: PlayStation joins the motion controller party. Developers for the technology are about to show off a demo.

3:28 p.m.: "So there's one that didn't leak out, huh?" Tretton says to laughter after the Final Fantasy XIV trailer.

3:26 p.m.: To the audience's shock, Tretton just revealed another exclusive for the PlayStation 3: Final Fantasy XIV Online.

3:23 p.m.: Final Fantasy XIII looking very strong. Eager to see how they've handled the battle system.

3:20 p.m.: Tretton moves on to Square Enix, and a trailer for Final Fantasy XIII.

3:18 p.m.: Producers take Leonardo Da Vinci's flying machine for a test flight. It works much like a glider. Assassin's Creed II takes place in the 15th Century during the Renaissance.

3:12 p.m.: God of War III concludes the montage, and generates the loudest applause.

3:10 p.m.: Tretton highlighting the PlayStation 3 lineup. Among the games shown: Final Fantasy XIII, Batman: Arkham Asylum, inFAMOUS, Ninja Gaiden and Tekken 6.

3:08 p.m.: Watching the bizarre image of Chun-Li from Street Fighter IV performing the running man on PlayStation Home. I'm scarred.

3:05 p.m.: Tretton moving on to PlayStation Home, the social network for the PlayStation 3. Tretton says third-party publishers such as Activision and Eidos will add content to the service.

3:03 p.m.: Tretton advances to the PlayStation Network, which currently has 24 million registered users worldwide. Tretton says more than 475 million pieces of content have been downloaded. PSN will add 50 PlayStation One titles to its library, including the highly-revered role-playing game Final Fantasy VII.

3:00 p.m.: Sony trots out a montage of the big titles for PSP in 2009. Among them: LittleBigPlanet, Jak and Daxter and Soulcalibur.

2:54 p.m.: Kojima unveils trailer for Peace Walker. "The cries for a hero bring the dawn of the new era," the teaser proclaims. Footage of game in action is very impressive. The game is scheduled for release in 2010.

2:52 p.m.: Solid Snake will also appear on the PSP Go, in a game called Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. The game takes place 10 years after Metal Gear Solid 3. Creator Hideo Kojima calls it a "true sequel to the Metal Gear Solid franchise." The main development team from Metal Gear Solid 4, for the PlayStation 3, will work on the game, and Kojima will write the plot script.

2:50 p.m.: Gran Turismo will serve as a launch title for the Go on October 1st.

2:48 p.m.: Sony showing a trailer for Gran Turismo on PSP Go. Arguably the best looking PSP game I've seen in a while. Also, another note on PSP Go: Hirai says the device will be significantly smaller and lighter than the current model.

2:45 p.m.: Yamauchi says this will be a full-featured version of the franchise for the portable, including Legacy License mode, ad-hoc racing with up to four players, and the ability to share cars in their garage with other players.

2:43 p.m.: Kazunouri Yamauchi, the creator of Gran Turismo, is on stage to reveal the debut of the racing franchise for the PSP.

2:40 p.m.: Media Go will also work on older PlayStation Portables, Hirai says. The PSP Go will sell for $249 starting October 1 in North America and Europe.

2:38 p.m.: The device will include 16GB of internal Flash memory, built-in Wi-Fi and Integrated Bluetooth. The main screen slides upward to reveal a directional pad, thumbstick and four face buttons. PSP Go will also provide access to a new online store called Media Go.

2:36 p.m.: Sony executive Kaz Hirai pulls out the revamped PlayStation Portable, called the PSP Go. "We have a few different names for the device. The first is the worst kept secret of E3," Hirai says.

2:34 p.m.: Tretton focusing on the games, including Dissidia Final Fantasy, Rock Band Unplugged and an Assassin's Creed title. But what gets the crowd roaring is the Hannah Montana PSP bundle. Nothing like sarcastic applause.

2:32 p.m.: Tretton moves on to the PlayStation Portable. Is the rumored announcement of a new handheld imminent?

2:30 p.m.: Beaudoin says they will run demos of the game featuring full 256-player matches. Still can't wrap my mind around that number.

2:28 p.m.: Teans are broken up into eight-player squads. About 30 or so players can be seen on the screen at once.

2:26 p.m.: Tretton introduces Andy Beaudoin from Zipper Interactive, who will show off a demo of MAG, a military shooter that can host up to 256 players online at once.

2:24 p.m.: Drake just escapes a building collapse during his encounter. Stunning.
