The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Romance, Sword Tutorial And Opening Cinematic Trailers

It's been a long time since I've played a Zelda game featuring Link and his adventures but I still admire the series and it's nice to see Nintendo still has fans from generation to generation with this fantastic franchise. This particular installment the Legend of Zelda series, Skyward Sword, takes place before the events of the Ocarina of Time. Take a look at the clips of the upcoming game.

You Lookin' To Get Shanked Again?: Shank 2 Hands-On Preview

Shank is back for another round of knife gutting, gun toting, and a whole lot of ass kicking in Shank 2. The game promises more of the same kill or be killed mentality with less button mashing and more game control. I definitely had fun playing the first game on my PlayStation 3. I must admit I did engage in a lot of button mashing but it was worth it shooting and cutting down my enemies down to size. Watch the hands on preview.

The Lords of War: Syndicate

The year is 2069. The word government does not exist as politicians have relinquished their rights of power to syndicates. The world is undermined and ruled by these organizations who dominate by ruthlessness and power. These syndicates have developed a way for consumers to interact with the world of technology via a chip implant. This implant allows them to interact with and control technology with just a blink of an eye.

In exchange for receiving the implants, or "chip'd", consumers would be able to enjoy numerous benefits, luxuries, and amenities such as housing, education, medical insurance, banking, entertainment, and jobs. These allowances don't come without the consumers selling their souls to the syndicates. The syndicates would be able to gain access to the consumers via the chip implants possibly making them do things that they don't want to necessarily do. They would be helpless as their bodies perform involuntary actions of murder, mayhem, malicious intent courtesy of the syndicates.

The syndicates fight for top market share and stop at nothing to achieve it. At the helm of their war are bio-engineered, chip augmented, enforcers, called agents. They are deadly and stealthy sentinels that patrol and maneuver through the dataverse. They can hack anything wired to the digital world, including enemies, their weapons, or the environments around them. They are deemed the most deadly technological weapons in the world.

In the game you take on the role of agent Miles Kilo, Eurocorps most deadly and elite of agents, as he ventures through the world of corporate espionage and murder. The original Syndicate game was a popular IP that was featured back in 1993 and was made available for several console mediums and PC formats. Syndicate was originally an isometric real time strategy based game created by Bullfrog Productions.

The game was the first in its series which was followed by two other installments, Syndicate: American Revolt, which served as an expansion pack, the sequel Syndicate Wars, and Syndicate Plus which included the original game and the expansion pack. Check out the announcement trailer of the game and the Syndicate interview with GameSpot's Maxwell McGee and Electronic Arts Global Brand Manager, Leo Soskin.

He's Heating Up!: NBA Jam On Fire Edition

The NBA Jam game was one of my favorite games to play back in the day. I would spend hours playing that game trying to pull off all the aerial acrobatic dunks with my favorite player. I used to love breaking the glass back board in the forth quarter. Hearing that announcer say "He's Heating Up" or "He's On Fire" always got me going. I used to imitate his voice in front of my co-workers at one of my old jobs. I always had them laughing with that one. lol This is probably one of the few games that I'm happy to see come back. It just doesn't get old. Check out the trailer for the upcoming game. It will be here the same day NBA 2K12 will release, October 4. Hmm... decisions, decisions.

I Am Onlive!

What you see in the picture is the OnLive service running on my PC. I subscribed to the service a couple of weeks ago and so far I love. Actually I been doing more gazing and browsing than actually playing as of late because I'm so amazed at how fast and smooth it runs. There's hardly any latency or lagging while you use the service. If there is any at all then it must be your system. The cloud gaming service is very unique. On you subscribe you get the latest games at a discounted price. You also get a bundle pack of games that allow you limitless play. In addition they have "Five Dollar Fridays" when they put up a popular game for sale every week.

It's a very amazing service and for $9.99 a month its a steal. Now I just need to play more games and stop being so awestruck. Take a look at my pics and video of the service.

Tony Romo Up On The Trading Block: Madden 12 Ultimate Team

I've been playing Madden Ultimate team quite a bit lately these days. I've been trying to build my team, the Black Renegades, and so far it's been quite a task. Losing has been quite a chore for my team. I think I really need to work on my defense. Right now I've just been playing to earn coins so I can buy new players. Let me tell you, getting new players don't come cheap.

To get the top rated players you have to buy into the Gold Premium Pack which cost a 9000 coins which means playing a lot of games to achieve the loot. If you play well you'll earn a pretty decent profit. I guess I've been losing but playing decent enough to earn some good coin. I don't know if that makes any sense to you but I've been able to buy three sets of cards so far. I just bought my last set last night. I got an extra quarterback, Eli Manning, which brought my QB total to three so I decided to put Tony Romo up on the trading block.

He's yours if you want him. All I really wanted was the Madden Ultimate Trade trophy anyways. So if you want we can make a trade so I can get the trophy and then make another trade so you can get your player back. Or I can trade down for one of your lesser players and you can have Romo. Hit me up on the PS3 and let me know! ~ MEKKACHYLD

Fighting Words Field Trip: Videogame Fight Clubs

We've all seen the movie The Fight Club where guys just got together and beat the hell out of each other. Well a videogame fight club is sort of similar minus the real live blood, punching, and bone breaking. Fellas save your fists for the joysticks and buttons. You can do all that via your favorite fighting game like Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 or Street Fighter X Tekken. Take a look.

I'm Shooting Down These Nasty Varmints: The Gunstringer Video Review

I haven't fully acclimated myself to the motion gaming movement just yet. I'm still old school with the game controller. After awhile you kind of just get tired of those dancing games and you just wanna play something else. You know, like something that doesn't involve dancing. I could take up finger point gun shooting anytime though. We all did it as kids playing Cowboys and Indians. Why not do it with a videogame? Sure we're older but we'd look a whole lot less sillier doing it. Watch as Blair Herter, G4, critique's this Xbox Kinect motion game.

Rocksmith - Real Life Guitar Game Video Preview

We've played Rockband and Guitar Hero which have been great buys in the rhythm based music genre of gaming but they haven't necessarily taught us how to truly play our instruments, particularly the guitar. With those games you get a fake guitar with no strings. You get a strummer  and buttons and that's about it. I've always wondered what it they could take that just a little bit further. Now UbiSoft has with Rocksmith. Rocksmith is the game where you can literally pick up any kind of electric guitar and seriously learn how to play. Hey it beats playing air guitar any day. I saw a little bit of this during E3 this past summer and I was kind of impressed. I would love to learn how to play a guitar in my own home using a videogame. Check the preview as Shaun McInnis, GameSpot, details the game in full.

TGS 2011: Team Ninja Interview

Have you ever been punctured in the chest by a dragon sword and live to tell about it? No? Well, neither did this guy. His contribution to the game doesn't necessarily go at a loss. Without him and the other goons in Ninja Gaiden 3 we might never see how devastating the dragon sword truly is. It might as well be a fan blade with a handle attached to it. Nonetheless he played his part thus his unfortunate end result. We thank him gratefully for his demonstration of not being able to best Ryu Hyabusa and his dragon sword. Find out why you might be feeling a little more on the guilty side towards killing in Ninja Gaiden 3 as Head of Team Ninja, Yosuke Hayashi, talks about the game's newest elements.

Star Wars: The Old Republic Updated Q&A - Companions

Almost every superstar, hero, heroine, villain, has some kind of go to companion that either helps them along their quest or soothes their ego after a long day's battle or adventure. He-Man had Cringer/Battlecat, Megatron had the useless and underachieving schemer, Starscream, Nathan Drake has Elena, Superman had Lois Lane, Michael Jordan had Scottie Pippen, and Spiderman had Mary Jane or Black Cat depending on the situation. These companions can sometimes influence or alter the course of one's quest. Watch as the guy's from Star Wars: The Old Republic's development team talk about the expanded roles of companions.

The Parallel of Light and Dark: Closure

Closure is a game where you use the element of light to navigate through paths that are impassable in dark. The game has been featured in a flash version over the last couple of years and has become a fan favorite. The environment of the game is completely surrounded by darkness with small patches of light which gives you a false sense of security. It makes you wonder what's out there in that vast darkness. You go through the game carrying a light source that helps to navigate you to the next level. I love these types of clever puzzle games that keep you on edge all the way through. Its definitely similar to Limbo but it has its own unique feel. Closure is being developed by lead programmer and desiginer, Tyler Glaiel, and Artist, John Schubbe. Look for the game to be released in the PlayStation Store early 2012.  Check out the video.

If you liked what you saw in the video you can play the flash version here:

Time To Hit The Ice: My Take On NHL 12

Well last year in the NHL was a blockbuster season. I don't think anyone expected the outcome. Who would've thought that the Bruins would've stepped into the Vancouver Canucks home and beat them on there own floor of ice. Not me and certainly not the Canucks fans who basically rioted after the game 7 seven loss in the championship game. There goes that luck of the Irish in Boston for ya. I'm sure Bruins fans when ape nuts over the championship win.

I played the demo of NHL 12 the other day and I must say I had fun playing it. I'm not an uber fan of Hockey. I don't remember any of the greatest games ever played nor do I know how many Stanley Cups the great ones, Wayne Gretzky or Mario Lemieux, held over their heads in their entire careers. What I do know is that this is a fun, hard, and physical game.

I would probably match it up with that of Football. Its tough and physical and the only organized team sport where fighting is permitted and somehow it works for the game. It's the real definition to the saying, "leaving it all on the floor." The sad thing is that its not as highly televised as much as basketball, football, and baseball are. Another thing I know is that Hockey fans take this game seriously so I'm sure that they were expecting a videogame that lived up to the sport.

I really loved playing this game. It made me really start to enjoy the sport of Hockey. I can't even tell you how many times I played the demo over and over. There was nothing really I could fault on the game. The only minor thing was partially towards the controls of the game. Ok so NHL 12 has this unique control feature which I suck at using. I tried using it and my hands and fingers just couldn't get it together as far as controlling the gameplay. Luckily NHL 12 features game controls from NHL 94 so It makes it a whole lot easier for me to play.

Now hears the problem, the NHL 94 control settings doesn't have the new featured controls. This means I miss out on making fake shots, the hustle moves, winding up for the shot, fighting, and all the other nuance features that this years game has to offer. I can still throw a good check down though. Well I'm a novice so I guess I shouldn't really be complaining too much. Other than that its a great game and very fun for someone just breaking into the hockey series like me. This may be one of my secret casual buys in the future.

Free To Play MMO: Firefall Gameplay Preview

It seems like MMOs are getting better and better these days. They're starting to rival console games in a big way. That's beginning to catch my interest as I have never really been into MMO games. Now the plots are becoming more intricate and more modern I can't help but notice. The Secret World really opened my eyes to MMOs a little bit more and now this new upcoming MMO, Firefall, may very well have me immersed in the whole MMO genre. I saw this on X-Play yesterday and I was really impressed with the gameplay and imagery. Developers are really stepping up their MMO game. I like where they're taking this genre of gaming. Take a look for yourself.

Now I may not be an expert at soccer but I do know a thing or two about games and FIFA has always been a pretty good buy. Now some people may disagree as they would be more privy to the Pro Evolution Soccer series which has rivaled the FIFA brand for a few years now. I may just have to try both of them out and decide for myself. You'll see what I think about the two games in a future post. Take a look at GameSpot's FIFA 12 gameplay demo.

Netflix Becomes 2 Entities

Ok so this year Netflix hit all of us with a big surprise and causing a whole lot of problems. They sideswiped us with the price, which is not to our benefit, then they hit us with the DVD rental Qwikster package. Netflix is splitting their up their brand in two pieces. One will their online streaming service, which will be known as Netflix.  Their DVD rental portion will be re-branded as Qwikster. The prices will not change. Due to this change Netflix suffered a huge loss of subscribers to the tune of 600,000 which led to a drop in their stock price. One of the few good things about this new change is the addition of videogames.

The down side of this change is that customers will have two separate accounts if you using both streaming and DVD rental service. Your account information will be migrated over to the new Qwikster service. I am currently subscribed to both services but I rarely use my DVD service anymore. I may opt out of my DVD services. The thing that's holding is the ability to rent games from Qwikster. I've been waiting for Netflix to do this for years. They were the last company to jump on the videogame bandwagon. Gamefly was one of the first followed by Blockbuster then recently by Redbox.

We could all get mad Netflix and say that they tried to pull the wool over our eyes but I really don't think that was the case. I think they're thinking was that they were at a point where they could grow and expand. You can't necessarily fault a company for trying to grow. That's just what they're supposed to do. What we can fault them on is how they went about doing it which wasn't necessarily the best way. They were sort of telling their customers that this was the move that they were going to make and that there was nothing that we could do about it. Now that rubbed a lot of us the wrong way. Which is why Reed Hastings, Netflix CEO and co-founder, posted this video:

Now whether you believe his apology or not its not personal, its just business. They have a business to maintain, grow, and expand. Do they care about their customers? Sure they do. That's how they became as big as they are now. Believe it or not the customer is not always right. I worked 7 years in retail sales and I've seen customers try to pull some quick fast ones over companies. You can't hijack a service just because you want it a certain way. A company has a right to grow or expand period.

Now there have been a lot of customers that have left and many more that are threatening of leaving Netflix. I'm mean really? Why would you jump ship all of the sudden? Believe or not this is not the worst business news that I've heard. This is really drops in a bucket compared to other company announcements. Ok, now that you've dropped Netflix where will you go?

Thinking about joining Blockbuster's online service? Really? Last time I checked they were hanging on by a thread. They've fallen short due to the popularity of the Redbox service. They're online service rates are higher than what Netflix's rates are as well. You also have to individually pay for their online movie streams. Netflix's streams are a part of your subscription so there is no added charge. Ok, so you've changed your mind and decide Redbox might be a safer bet.

Sure their prices are cheaper but they don't have a streaming service like Netflix or Blockbuster. On top of that you have to go to a location like a grocery store or restaurant to make your selections. Gone is the ability to make your choices from the comfort of your home. Oh, may I also mention if you're late with Redbox they charge you a dollar a day until you return your movie or game selection. I don't know about you guys, call me lazy, but I don't always feel like leaving the house to pick up or drop off a movie. Doing that in the winter time would be extra annoying. Yeah, I've probably been spoiled by Netflix's streaming service but I find that way of renting movies is so yesterday.

So when you think about it Netflix is not all that bad. Are there other avenues for movies? There definitely are but like I said about Blockbuster you pay individually for each movie rental or full purchase. Examples of this practice are Vudu.com's HD streaming movie service, PlayStation Store movie selection, and YouTube's online streaming movie service. The only other viable option would be the Hulu Plus service at $7.99 per month. Anything else would be uncivilized. lol

My point is there are many, several different choices for people to choose from. What I like may not be what somebody else likes. Maybe you don't like Netflix because you don't like their selections so you choose Blockbuster. Or maybe you roll with Redbox because you believe you just can't afford Netflix or Blockbuster. So everyone's situation is different which allows them to choose what they choose. So at the end of the day don't knock Netflix's hustle. Sure their stock price dropped and they lost customers but this is only a temporary. It won't put them out of business.

Overtime they'll gradually regain those lost customers and then some. I see their stock price being actually higher than what it once was in the future. Going through this experience will only make them stronger as a company and will allow them to provide better services to their customers. Before you know it Netflix will be the same company that we all know and love.

Button Mashing Gone Awry: Gamepad Repairs

Power A Pro Wireless Controller for the PS3 being repaired
We all love to play our videogames but we hate when parts of our game system get damaged and fail to operate correctly. One for the worst damages you can have with your game system would be that of the game controller or gaming pad. The items drive and control your games. You're dead without them well unless you have a motion gaming system like the Xbox 360 Kinect or the PlayStation Move systems. Unfortunately not every game uses those functions and not every game is meant to be played via a motion system.

Over the weekend one of my controllers fell victim at the hands of my brother by way of button mashing. Button mashing sucks because the buttons on a controller take a huge beating. Actually the button themselves don't take the brunt of the beating by a gamer's fingers. It the touch point padding underneath that take the major damage. When that happens your buttons on your game pad become dull and worn out. You'll notice that they don't have the same bounce to them like they did before. They sink down into the bedding of the controller and they won't rise up.

Button padding from Power A Pro Wireless PS3 controller

This padding sits underneath the game pads buttons and top of each designated button sensor on the circuit board. When you hit a button on the controller the padding, the black nodes you see, touch its designated button sensor which sends a message to your console which determines which button is pressed. The padding is completely made of rubber and is soft to the touch. The particular piece of padding you see came out of my Power A Pro Wireless controller for my PS3. The padding for the triangle button was damaged so I took it out to replace it.

Button padding for Pro A Wireless circuit board

The problem with this situation was that I didn't have padding that exactly fit my particular controller. In the picture you see there are only three black rubber nodes. I cut the fourth one out which was damaged. I then cut another piece of padding from an old Xbox 360 controller that I had to make it fit but the button pressure was off and in the end my triangle button on the PS3 got stuck. Then I used another controller in this picture here:

My old Interact Propad 8 controller
This is my old Interact Propad 8 controller. This was made before PCs started using controllers with dual analog sticks. I don't even remember when I got it. I think it was sometime around 2002. So I decided to take it apart to see what pieces I could use to repair my Power A Pro Wireless PS3 controller. This is what I found:

Propad 8 dissassembled
What you see on the left are individual rubber pads for the ProPad 8 digital controller. The padding for the right is for the controller's D-Pad. It looks similar to the padding that I had in my Power A Pro Wireless controller but it doesn't exactly fit. The green pads are the ones that I was hoping that I would find. These work great for my controller. I like these better because they fit individually into each button space and I don't have to worry about doing any resizing to make them fit. They also provide good balance and bounce for your controller. You'll get a much lighter  feel to the buttons but the controller will remain sturdy and not loose in side your controller. Here's another picture:

Top and bottom of green pads

So what I did was that I took the green padding and placed them in my button spaces for my Power A Pro Wireless controller.
Green pads placed inside Power A Pro Wireless casing
As you can see the pads fit with my Power A Wireless controller perfectly. They individually fit in each space allowing for perfect placement with the button sensors on the circuit board.

The finished product

And voila! Here's the final product. This was really an easy fix. I took the pictures while I was repairing it yesterday morning. This keeps me from having to go and spend another $40 on yet another controller. I've already been through so many. I'm always taking stuff apart trying to rebuild and fix them. I've been pretty good at it over the years too. I'm such a gear head. Now if you're thinking about fixing your own controllers you don't have to go fishing for an old controller to get those rubber pads. You can find them easily on Ebay. They're really cheap. Ok, now its time to get back to playing Madden! lol
