I finally got a chance to play Shank over the weekend. It's been long overdue. I purchased it from the PlayStation store on Saturday and enjoyed the hell out of it. I had a lot of fun going to work on the goons that constantly come at you. It's a 2D hack n slash that doesn't quit. I really loved the combo system that the game has. You can juggle numerous variations of multiple combos with your weapons. There grapples and throws that you can mix it up with as well. I love how each weapon is assigned to a button allowing for easy combo juggling. I have a lot of fun with that.
The boss are not so hard either. Don't let them fool you with their gargantuan sizes in the game. There are elements to them that will bring their downfall as I slowly found out. When I first started I just rushed into the fights with the Bosses and not really looking for the edge. A lot of games don't easily allow you to see how to defeat a boss. You have to spend a lot of time trying to figure that out. If you're paying close attention while playing Shank you'll soon find out the bosses' weaknesses pretty easily.
In the story you play as Shank, a mob hit man, who is on a revenge mission to avenge his murdered girlfriend Eva. The game's story is kind of interesting. Its actually 2 parts in one. You have the story leading up to where Shank's girl gets killed and you have one after. The downside is that you can only play the first part in a two-player co-op. The single player mode doesn't encompass it.
This game has Quentin Tarrantino's name all over it. Actually I think it has a better plot than Machete. I wouldn't mind watching this in the movie theaters. I could really see him making this game into a movie. I really don't know who would play Shank and the other characters but Tarrantino would be the guy to make a movie out of this game.
The game is a hack n slash that's very short and sweet. You'll have your fun and you get your kicks out of playing the game. There's nothing to be over critical about. I watched one of GameSpot's video reviews about Shank and it sounded like they trashed the game with half ass compliments. It didn't make sense to me at all. They were far too critical on the game than I would have been. It was almost like they were trying to keep people from buying it. The game is no master piece by any means, but hell, you get your money's worth.
If you're talking about Metal Gear Solid, Splinter Cell, Final Fantasy then I could understand why one would criticize the Shank game like they did but Shank is not like those other games. Its very short for one and it doesn't have very much depth. It wasn't meant to. It was only meant to have a laugh and enjoy the fun. So to that guy that called the review, take some time out to play the game again and relax a little.
All in all I enjoyed the game and its cartoony graphics. This game could've been done in a lot themes and different version. I'm just glad that they chose this one. So with that said I deem this game a good buy and well worth the $9.99 value. Actually I ended up only paying just $5.00 because I have the PlayStation Plus+ subscription. It's still a great buy though.
