I finally beat Shank. That was a tough button masher but I had fun playing it. Getting past the last boss, Caesar, was no joke. I took me a couple of tries, wait, it took me a lot of tries to defeat him. Even getting to him was a little annoying in the last few parts of the game. There are some parts towards the end of the game when you might think that its totally impossible to get through. There was one part towards the end where I had to avoid heat seeking missiles that constantly kept searching for me. I had a bunch of goons coming at me when that was happening too. I don't even know how I got through that.
Near the end of the game it was just one of those scenarios where there was just always one more guy to get through before you got to the actual boss just like in the movies. I pretty much just ran through the game. I didn't really have a scheme or a plan to play it. I mean come on, it's a button masher. I should have though. For instance if you watched the bosses when you fought them they all had a certain pattern to follow in order to defeat them. It took me a few times because I did everything the hard way. Once when I saw the patterns though the game was much easier to play.
I finally make it to Caesar after getting through all the goons and I just went at him with everything. I'm watching his life bar and noticing that I was barely making a dent into him and he was having his way with me. I was trying to figure what I could throw at him to deplete his health but nothing. Every time I fought him I ended up dying. I tried changing my weapons, throwing bombs, and grappling or lunging, but nothing worked. The grappling was funny because as soon as I tried to do it he would grab me and slam me on the ground like 3 times. The other scenario is that he would grab and slam me then throw me up in the air and shoot me with his guns.
I was confused and I didn't know what to do. So after losing about 30 times I started to play again and I went at him just as I did so many times before and I accidentally did this move where I countered him after hitting L1 on my PS3 controller then I lunged at him by pressing R1. I was so surprised at what happened. Shank grabbed him and jumped up in the air with him and pulled off this aerial slam giving Caesar massive damage to his health. I was so surprised that it happened. It was so unexpected. So after that I focused on trying to get into position with Caesar so I could counter him then pull off the lunge move to perform that aerial slam.
After some time maneuvering with that strategy I finally beat the game. I was more or less relieved that I had finished it. I wasn't expecting the second half of that fight where we fight outside of that room. That caught me off guard the first time around. I was lucky enough to beat Caesar inside because his hits towards me were so punishing as they are with every villain in videogames.
For a button masher it had a funny story to it. The story really reminded me of a Quentin Tarantino movie. Okay the story reminded me of all of Quentin Tarantino's movies. I could really see him taking this game and running with it. I would love to see it in the movies. So towards the end of the game we find out Shank isn't just on this mission for revenge of the death of his girlfriend. We find out that she was also with child. Then Caesar nonchalantly says that if he would've known that then his decision about killing her would've been different. I think that's enough to make anyone lose their grip. I think the game had a good ending when you finally defeat Caesar and Shank starts slicing him up and finishes with a knifed-dragon punch which was pretty neat to watch.
So I've beaten the game somewhat and I have all of the trophies except 2. I still have to beat the game on hard and I haven't played the co-op back story yet. I played the hard mode and I barely made it into the second level. I don't know how I'm gonna beat it this time around. I don't know why they set up the co-op like they did with the back story. It kind of sucks that I have to team up with someone to play it. It would be nice if I could play it on my own. I'd have to say though that Shank is one of the best button mashers I've played in a while. I can say that I won't be annoyed playing it again to get those last 2 trophies. Watch the boss battle and story ending in this clip.
