Xbox Live users will have the benefit of watching ESPN from the comfort of their consoles. So you don't even have to change the channel anymore to get your sports fix. This is done via an ESPN app from Xbox Live. Unfortunately not everyone will be able to enjoy the spoils of sport. The feature will only be available to Xbox Live Gold users who have high speed internet from an affiliated cable service provider such as Comcast. The streaming sports content will be provided via ESPN's ESPN3.com which provides over 3500 sporting events 24 hours a day.
I guess if you weren't able to get ESPN3 before then this shouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. Not to knock the new ESPN app but I wouldn't want to watch sports on my gaming system. Not that I wouldn't want to but I would be more concerned about running my console many hours at a time by simply just watching sports. I just would like to conserve the life of my gaming system. I would hate to have my Xbox 360 burn out because I was constantly watching sports. I think I would rather leave it just strictly for movies and games.
If I wanted to watch sports I would just watch it on my TV. If I wanted the whole online streaming experience I would find some kind of way to integrate ESPN3.com into a TV streaming app that picks up streaming feeds like Tversity, PlayOn, or Twonky, and run that on my console. You don't really need ESPN's app to do all that. The ESPN app seems like it serves more as a luxury than a necessity.
Like I said I'm not necessarily knocking the app but it just seems like they're trying to reinvent the wheel here and make some revenue at the same time. You'd have to be a total sports nut to buy that app strictly for watching sports. I just believe people are more diverse than that. Watch as Adam Sessler talks with Executive Producer, Todd Stevens, about how the app works.
