I always wondered what goes into the thought process of a gamer when they choose their characters in a fighting game. For me it was who I felt best that would represent myself on the TV screen when I played. I grew up with 3 other brothers, I'm the oldest, and we all had our own characters of representation in a video game. I want to break down our own dichotomy as to how my brothe

rs and I chose our characters. As for a reference I will use the Street Fighter series because its the game that basically started it all. It's the Don Dada of all fighting games. The characters I chose from time to time where Ken & Ryu. Yeah, I know what your thinking, easy picks. They're basically the poster boys of the game. Without those two characters there is no Street Fighter. For me those 2 characters represented youthfulness, strength, determination, and a hunger to win. My favorite was Ken. I always related to him. He was quicker and faster than Ryu. Ken's dragon punch also went out wider than Ryu's. To me Ken always seemed to be brash and always had something to prove. I felt that emulated me a lot. My brother Allen always chose Ryu. We both had similar interests but slightly different. Ryu was quiet and disciplined. My brother was also that way. His second favorite was Guile. He carried the same quiet strength that Ryu had. My other brother, Endy always seemed to ch

oose big strong guys like Zangief, Balrog, or Baraka. Endy saw himself as a tough guy. His ego was huge when he was growing up. Still is today. Honestly there's not a room big enough that can contain his swelled ego. Then there's my youngest brother Ken. It's hard for me to say but he always gravitated towards the female characters like Chun-Li or Rose. For the longest I always wondered about him but it seems that I don't have to worry now. Although he is trying to seek a career as a celebrity stylist. No offense bro but all I keep thinking about are those gay guys who just always seem to know everything about the latest trends in female fashions. How do they always know what's hot for a woman? It's so strange. But I digress. Getting back to my point, each character we chose represented who we were as people. The characters matched our personalities so we stuck with them. I always wondered if other people picked characters like we picked them based on self actualization and representation or just because they liked their range of moves. For me it was a little of both. Ok maybe I'm getting a little too Freudian on you guys but those are just my random thoughts.
